CERTIFICATIONS

National Strength and Conditioning Association – NSCA

Established in 1993, the cost for the material is approximately $500. The exam, which is 140 questions, will cost you an extra $235-$270 for members, $355-$390 for non-members unless you want to take it online, then it's $285 for members and $405 for non- members. The NSCA certification holds high industry recognition and is accredited through the NCCA. Courses are available either online or in limited US cities and the exam locations are in major cities worldwide. Re-testing is available and prices are $185-$220 for members or $305-$340 for non-members for the paper and pencil test. The online re-test prices are $235 members and $355 for non- members. Total time to complete the course is approximately 4-9 months. This certification requires renewal every 3 years at a cost of $500. To become certified you must be at 18 years of age, have a high school diploma, and be CPR/AED certified. NSCA does offer 2- day workshops if you are interested in getting some hands-on training. AFPA – American Fitness Professionals & Associates
Established in 1994, the AFPA Personal Trainer certification cost is approximately $400.00. This includes all materials and the cost of the 200 question exam. The AFPA certification holds medium to high industry recognition. AFPA also offers certification in nutrition, and other specialties in fitness.  AFPA is accredited through Vital Research, ANMAB & AADP. Courses are available through distance learning, online and in select US cities. Retesting is available. The total time to complete the course is approximately 2-3 months. This certification requires renewal every 2 years. You will need 16 CEU’s and a $85.00 renewal fee. To become certified you must be at 18 years of age, have a high school diploma and CPR/AED. American Council on Exercise - ACE

ACE was established in 1985 and the certification including the 150 question exam will cost you approximately $400 not including the exam. The exam itself will run approximately $220, unless you want to take it online, then it runs $250. The ACE certification holds high industry recognition, and is accredited through the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). Courses and exam locations are available both online and in US major cities. If you fail to pass the test, retesting is available; prices are $135 or $185 if retest is done online. Total time to complete course is approximately 3-6 months. An ACE certification requires renewal every 2 years and you will need 20 CEU’s plus the renewal fee of $400. To become certified you must be at 18 years of age, and CPR/AED certified. ACE does offer 2 day workshops if you are interested in getting hands-on training, not mandatory but useful.

 

American College of Sports Medicine – ACSM

Established in 1954, the cost is approximately $130-$375 not including all materials (an additional $125). The exam, which is 125-150 questions long, is an additional $279. The ACSM certification holds high industry recognition. ACSM is accredited through NCCA and courses are available in most major US cities as are the exam locations. Retesting is available, priced at $150. Total time to complete the course is approximately 4-9 months. This certification requires renewal every 3 years at an approximate cost of $800. To become certified you must be at 18 years of age, have a high school diploma, and be CPR/AED certified. ACSM does offer optional 1,2,and 3 day hands-on workshops.

 

ACTION

Established in 2010, the certification cost is approximately $65 which includes all material. The exam cost is included, and is comprised of 100 questions. The ACTION certification holds no industry recognition, due to its newness. The ACTION exam is built to NCCA accreditation standards. Courses are available online. Retesting is available, prices are $35. Total time to complete course is approximately 2-3 months. This certification requires renewal every 2 years, with a fee of $65.

 

Aerobics and Fitness Association of America - AFAA

Established in 1983, the AFAA course cost is approximately $470 which does not include all material but does include the final exam. There is an additional cost of $59 for materials but you can choose to take just the exam for $199 without the program. AFAA certification holds Medium industry recognition and is accredited through the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC). The cost of recertification with AFAA is approximately $600. AFAA has 3 day workshops around the United States if you wanted to get hands-on experience.

 

International Fitness Professionals Association – IFPA 

Established in 1994, IFPA will run you approximately $425 which includes all material and the cost of the exam. IFPA is accredited through NCCA and holds medium to high industry recognition. Courses are available in US major cities, as are the exam locations. Retesting is available; priced at $79. The total time to complete the course is approximately 2-6 months. This certification requires renewal every 2 years. You will need 20 CEU’s and a $320 fee. National Academy of Sports Medicine - NASM

Established in 1987, the certification cost is approximately $600-$800. This includes all materials and the cost of the 120 question exam. The NASM certification holds high industry recognition. NASM is accredited through NCCA. Courses are available in select US cities, as are the exam locations. Retesting is available and the price is $200. This certification requires renewal every 2 years and costs about $500. To become certified you must be at least 18 years of age and CPR/AED certified. NASM does offer 2-day workshops if you’re interested in getting hands-on training.

 

National Council for Certified Personal Trainers - NCCPT

Established in 1995, the cost of this program ranges from $400-$600. The NCCPT test consists of over 200 questions, and their certification holds Medium industry recognition. NCCPT is accredited through NCCA. The cost of re-certification with NCCPT is approximately $75. NCCPT also offers 2-day workshops for hands-on training.

 

National Council on Strength and Fitness – NCSF

NCSF certification costs approximately $309 which includes all material but not the exam. The exam (150 questions) costs $199. The NCSF certification holds high industry recognition and is accredited through NCCA. Courses are available in major US cities, there are over 400 testing locations in North America. Retesting is available and will cost $135. Total time to complete course is approximately 4-6 months. This certification requires renewal every 2 years at a cost of about $400-$800. NCSF does offer 2 day workshops, if you are interested in getting some hands-on training.

 

National Exercise and Sports Trainers Association - NESTA

A NESTA certification will run approximately $400-$500 which includes all material. The exam which is 100 questions cost extra and is approximately $199. The NESTA certification holds medium industry recognition and is accredited through NCCA. Courses are available in major US cities, as are the testing locations. Retesting is available at the price of $95. The total time to complete course is approximately 4-6 weeks. This certification requires renewal every 2 years at a cost of about $600. NESTA does offer 2 day workshops, for hands on training in very limited cities. Requirements for certification are 18 years of age, high school diploma and CPR certification.

 

National Federation of Professional Trainers – NFPT

Established in 1988, the cost of an NFPT certification is approximately $425 which includes all material. The exam (120 questions) costs an additional $44. The NFPT certification holds Medium to high industry recognition and is accredited through NCCA. Courses are available in major US cities. Courses are available in major US cities, there are over 300 testing locations worldwide. Retesting is available at a cost of $60. The total time to complete the course is approximately 2-6 months. This certification requires renewal every year at a cost of $85. To become certified you must be at 18 years of age, a high school diploma. NFPT also offers 2 day workshops if you are interested in getting some hands on training.

 

National Personal Training Institute - NPTI

NPTI was established in the year 2000 and holds medium-high industry recognition. The cost is approximately $6000 which includes all materials, the exam, and CPR/AED certification. NPTI is accredited through State certified training. Courses and exam locations are available both online and in 30 US major cities. Total time to complete course is approximately 4-12 months. This degree does not require renewal, and to become certified you must be at 18 years of age, a US citizen, or a US green card holder.

 

World Fitness Association - WFA

Established in 1980, they have many different pricing options and payment plans ranging from $700 - $4,000. WFA is the unique alternative to online and study-at-home courses. They offer both Personal Trainer Certifications and Group Fitness Certifications that are only administered through methods of hands-on, practical training. The hands-on approach ensures their graduates are job ready upon completion of their course(s). WFA offers placement assistance with most major gyms and health clubs nationwide. To become certified you must be at least 18 years of age. CPR/AED certification is included with all programs. This certification requires renewal every 2 years and costs about $220.
